John Steller is a visiting principal faculty specialist with the Center for Global Sustainability at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. His work focuses on greenhouse gas and policy analysis in the agriculture, forestry, and land use (AFOLU) sector. Prior to joining CGS, Steller spent more than a decade at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where he led greenhouse gas analyses for the AFOLU and industrial processes sectors. He also served as program lead for an EPA-led international capacity-building initiative that supported developing countries in strengthening reporting under the Paris Agreement. His expertise spans clean electricity tax credits, corporate accounting, bioenergy policy and international climate transparency. Steller serves as a UNFCCC technical expert reviewer for the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework. He holds a master’s degree in climate science and solutions from Northern Arizona University and a bachelor’s degree in environmental geology from Murray State University.
