Barack Obama: On America, Democracy, and International Security - Memorable Words of the 44th President of the United States from His Speeches January 2009–January 2017

This study presents thoughts and perspectives of President Barack Obama on topics important to America and the world, drawn from his speeches as the 44th President of the United States from 2009–2017. The topics cover a wide range of subjects, including freedom, America and the American people, democracy and individual rights, effective government, international security, and success in life.

Chapter I addresses America and the American people: freedom, including its expansion and role in achieving security; opportunity and education; and the American people—their character, spirit, and ability to work together to meet challenges and overcome adversity. The chapter concludes with thoughts on the importance of community, family, and faith.

Chapter II addresses democracy and individual rights; the contrast between democracy and authoritarianism; and the necessity for defending and advancing rights at home and abroad. The chapter includes that the primary purpose of the democratic form of government is the protection and promotion of individual rights, including the right to security.

In Chapter III, President Obama discusses American democracy, including the purpose of democratic government, the responsibility of Congress, and the importance of citizen involvement with government at all levels. The chapter concludes with ways to improve American politics.

Chapter IV presents perspectives on the American economy; the global economy; and the environment, including the economic importance of preserving “our planet, commanded to our care by God.” President Obama takes a wide view regarding the effective functioning of economies, including such areas as health, democracy, and the full participation of women and girls.

Chapter V addresses America in the world—American leadership and responsibility, international security and the international architecture, and threats to peace and security. Topics include the roles of international organizations, international law, and military force in advancing peace and security. He expresses his view that peace and security can only be established and maintained by the stability that democracy, the rule of law, and respect for individual rights provide.

In Chapter VI, President Obama shares thoughts with young people on topics including achieving true success, and what is required to achieve this success. The chapter addresses ways to make a better America, and a better world.

Chapter VII concludes with thoughts for the future, and a last message.

President Obama’s thoughts reflect his knowledge and experience gained from a lifetime of service to community and country. By building on his wisdom you can gain a deeper insight into many problems, and their solutions. The thoughts of Barack Obama are an invaluable legacy that can help us meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
