On October 26, UMD School of Public Policy Career Services and Alumni Relations, along with the International Development (IDEV) Student Council hosted a panel of alumni speakers. SPP’s Director of Career Services and Alumni Relations Bryan Kempton started the discussion with the speakers, and then the audience of graduate and undergraduate students had the chance to ask their own questions. There was also an opportunity for students to connect with panelists one-on-one.
Laura Garnett (MPP ’13) is currently a program analyst with USAID’s Bureau on Latin America and the Caribbean; she began her position after finishing a Presidential Management Fellowship with the agency. Maureen Lorenzetti (MPM ’09) is an advisor at the World Bank; she leads communications and strategy on budget, technology, security and conflict resolution programs across the institution. Also at the World Bank as a consultant, Kate Brolley (MPP ’17) is working on a new project to create indicators to benchmark integration policies for migrants and refugees in more than 150 countries. Finally, Chloe Scwenke (PhD ’00) is both an SPP professor as well as the director of the Global Program on Violence, Rights, and Inclusion at the International Center for Research on Women.
The discussion was divided between advice on navigating careers in the field and a broader conversation of emerging changes in the field. Both panelists and students appreciated the opportunity to engage in conversation.
