The Geoeconomics of U.S.–China Competition: Leverage, Limits and Blowback

Back to All Events

Economic power has become an important arena of U.S.–China competition. Both countries use a mix of coercive tools and inducements to advance their national interests and strategic goals. This event examines how Washington and Beijing wield economic statecraft and the opportunities and constraints policymakers face in doing so. Guest speaker Gerard DiPippo of Eurasia Group will draw on his experience analyzing the geoeconomics of U.S.–China relations across the intelligence community, think tanks and the private sector to unpack the tradeoffs, unintended consequences and potential blowback of turning economic relationships into sources of strategic leverage. This event will be moderated by Dr. Josh Shifrinson, SPP professor and director of the Foreign Policy Strategy and Statecraft Program (FPSS).
