In Annapolis, Jazz Lewis MPP ’14 spent years on the floor of the Maryland House of Delegates. Today, that experience shapes his work at the University of Maryland, where he now serves as director of state government relations.
Lewis started in his new role Jan. 5 and will serve as the University’s primary point of contact with state and local government. He will represent UMD in dealings with the General Assembly, the governor’s office and state agencies, and will work closely with other Maryland universities and higher education organizations through the University’s Office of Government Relations.
Lewis previously held several leadership positions within the Democratic caucus. As majority whip, he worked closely with House leadership to line up votes, guide legislation through the chamber and keep the floor running during major debates.
Before serving as majority whip, Lewis chaired the House Democratic Caucus and worked as an adviser to Rep. Steny Hoyer.
In his new role, Lewis will work to advance the University’s priorities at the state level, supporting research, academic programs and student success across campus.
