Kerra Dukes is driven by her passion for children's advocacy and aims to ensure that the youth of Baltimore City have the support they need to thrive. Dukes seeks to expand her knowledge and gain valuable insights from fellow child advocates. Her interest in public policy lies in its ability to intersect with her diverse interests, providing a platform for equitable change. The junior, a public policy major, was awarded a Karabelle Pizzigati Fellowship in February. This fellowship, created collaboratively by the School of Public Policy and the School of Public Health, motivates outstanding students to pursue careers in children's advocacy. It offers practical experience by partnering with organizations dedicated to making a tangible difference in the lives of children.

What inspired your interest in children's advocacy?

As a Baltimore native, the well-being of our youth is always at the forefront of my mind. I've seen how the experiences that impact you as a child, set the foundations for adulthood. Making sure the children of Baltimore City have the resources, support, and opportunities that will shape them into exceptional adults is why I am passionate about children's advocacy.

Why did you apply for the fellowship and what experience do you hope to gain?

Being a part of this fellowship would allow me to pursue my passions and gain more knowledge in this realm. I was first drawn to this fellowship because of Professor Slaughter's leadership role in it. Since I was able to learn under her in the "Public Leaders and Active Citizens" policy course, I knew of the exceptional work she's done as a children's advocate.  Along with the inspiration she provided me and my passion for the well-being of all children, I hope to gain insights and perspectives from the advocates in this field.

Why do you choose to study public policy?

Public Policy is at the intersection of my many different interests. It allows me to gain knowledge in everything from the nonprofit sector to legislation and advocacy. It also allows me to study alongside scholars who want to better the world by looking through an equitable lens. Studying public policy has opened the doors to opportunities that have cultivated me into the change agent I am today.
