It is once again time for Career Service's bi-annual student internship panel! Come out and hear from your fellow students (see below for biographies of the panelists) discuss their previous internships, including their application process, the internship itself, and tips for having a successful, meaningful experience. There will also be allocated time for attendees to ask questions to the panelists. 

The panel will take place on October 25th from 12 pm to 1 pm on Zoom. This event is open to all SPP students!

Panelists: 

1) Denise Burroughs

Denise (they/she) is a first year MPP student, first-generation college student and proud double terp. They graduated from UMD in May 2022 with a degree in communication and public relations and three minors in sustainability studies, rhetoric, and nonprofit leadership/social innovation. Denise currently holds two graduate assistantships in the School of Public Policy: one as a communication GA for SPP's internal and external communication department, and another as a teaching assistant for PLCY310. In summer 2022, Denise was a marketing intern for Policy Professor Ebonie Johnson Cooper-Jean's nonprofit the Young, Black & Giving Back (YBGB) Institute where they focused on social media outreach for YBGB's fifth annual Give 8/28 event, which designated five days of fundraising for Black-led and Black-benefitting nonprofits around the country.

2) Kimberly Clopp

Kimberly (she/her) is a current Master of Public Policy student focusing on International Security and Economic Policy. Prior to University of Maryland, Kimberly studied Society, Ethics, and Human Behavior at University of Washington. Her interests lie at the intersection of violent interstate and intrastate conflict, human rights, peacekeeping and diplomacy, and transnational and domestic terrorism. Kimberly recently interned with CRDF Global's International Security Assistance Division working on project implementation for the Department of State's Office of Cooperative Threat Reduction.

3) Shira Diamond

Shira (she/her) is an alumna of the University of North Florida where she majored in Sociology and minored in Political Science and Professional Education. At the University of Maryland, College Park, she has focused her studies on Education Policy, specifically disability issues within education. Shira has interned previously with the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Finance and Operations, as an undergraduate student and is happy to discuss this process with any interested student. Most recently, she spent this past summer interning with the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on the Financial Markets and Community Investment team. There she spent her time working on an engagement analyzing personnel management practices within the Security and Exchange Commission and was able to make substantial contributions to the engagement regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion issues.

4) Ewaoluwa Ogundana

Ewaoluwa (she/her) is a Master of Public Policy Candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she focuses her studies on the intersection of immigration and higher education policy. She is a graduate teaching assistant with the College Park Scholars program where she helps freshmen grow their leadership skills and learn about leadership theories. She holds a Bachelors in Political Science from Trinity Washington University where she graduated summa cum laude. She’s held 7 internships throughout her higher education journey, and her most recent was with the City of College Park Government through a fellowship with the Maryland Municipal League (MML). While there she learned different governance lessons and had the opportunity to disseminate local policy to the College Park community through their communications department.

5) Carlos Orbe, Jr.

Carlos (he/him) is an alumnus of Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY where he majored in Communications/ Marketing with a concentration in Public Relations and minored in Philosophy. After completing his legal studies/ work at the Department of Justice, Carlos moved his focus to policy and legislation. At the University of Maryland, College Park, he is pursuing his Masters of Public Management, specializing in Social Policy and Leadership Management. Carlos has held multiple senior level fellowships and internships with The Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus, The Judicial Proceedings Committee, The Maryland Alliance for Justice Reform, and Rubenstein Public Relations in New York. Most recently, he interned with the Maryland Latinos Unidos Organization on health and education policy developing community initiative programs. Currently, he is a senior policy fellow for the same organization creating a policy and legislative initiative from the ground up.
