CISSM director Nancy Gallagher was elected as a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations in June 2019.
Gallagher, who is also a Research Professor at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, has been a faculty member and researcher at the school for nearly 20 years, contributing substantively to the expansion of CISSM research and outreach. Gallagher was appointed as director of CISSM in 2017. In making the appointment, Dean Robert Orr recognized Gallagher’s “track-record of engaging in high-impact, policy-relevant research” as well as her many contributions to graduate education at the school.
Before coming to the University of Maryland, Gallagher was the executive director of the Clinton administration's Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Task Force and worked with the special advisor to the President and the secretary of state to build bipartisan support for U.S. ratification. She has been an arms control specialist in the State Department, a Foster Fellow in the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, and a faculty member at Wesleyan University.
