The Counseling Center has collaborated with the School of Public Policy to provide clinicians that work specifically with policy students and right in the location of Public Policy. SPP’s embedded counselor provides the following services:

  • Mental health appointments for SPP students
  • Consultation with SPP faculty and staff who are concerned about a student’s mental health
  • Outreach programming tailored to the needs of the School of Public Policy

Evan Klein is a licensed mental health professional employed by the Counseling Center who works specifically with the School of Public Policy.

By placing counselors onsite, the Counseling Center makes it easier for SPP students to get mental health services, and offers more direct access for faculty and staff to consult with a mental health professional about how to best support students. Additionally, being embedded in SPP provides the context needed to tailor services and programs to the unique needs of our students.

To schedule a clinical appointment with Evan, you can use the online scheduling system or contact him via email at evank@umd.edu to schedule. Public Policy students can meet with Evan on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the second and fourth Fridays of each month.

Evan is not currently available for unscheduled sessions with students. Urgent services are available to any UMD students in person at the Shoemaker Building during business hours or by phone at 301-314-7651 outside of business hours.

Your visits with your embedded counselor and any other Counseling Center staff are confidential. Your counselor will NOT share information about you with your program’s faculty, staff or anyone else.

Just like with all Counseling Center services, meeting with the embedded counselor is free of charge.

Just because you are an SPP student does not mean that your appointment has to be with the embedded counselor. Additional Counseling Center services and providers are available for any UMD students at the Shoemaker Building

The embedded counselor is available to consult with SPP faculty and staff regarding any concerns they may have about a student’s mental health and how to best support the student. The embedded counselor may also provide general guidance on best practices for bolstering student mental health and wellbeing within the School of Public Policy.

Yes! Evan provides outreach programming focused on mental health education and awareness tailored to SPP. Programs are available for student groups, classes, program departments and other groups of faculty or staff by request. Regardless of the audience, the focus of this programming will be on improving student mental health and wellbeing. To request an outreach program, contact the embedded counselor or submit a Counseling Center outreach request.
