On Tuesday Nov. 2 from 12:30 - 1:45 pm, Karla Bruce, Chief Equity Officer of Fairfax County will be joining Professor Alana Hackshaw's PLCY 300 class to discuss the evolution of One Fairfax Racial and Social Equity Resolution and Policy which incorporates taking an equity lens to examining government processes and decision making. Using impact assessments, Fairfax County has developed committees to evaluate how racial disparities affect core areas of County residents' lives such as housing, schools, and employment. Ms. Bruce will discuss the County's progress since this novel approach to equity in governance was adopted and her leadership in facilitating this shift in government attitudes and practices. Her discussion will also focus on how Fairfax County represents an important example for local and county governments seeking to address racial disparities among their residents.

Bio for Karla Bruce

Karla Bruce serves as the Chief Equity Officer for Fairfax County, Virginia. She has over 25 years of local government management experience and is known as a driver of innovation in public service delivery, bridging the efforts of local government with the collective action of residents and broad networks of partners to strategically address the issues that contribute to the vulnerabilities and lack of opportunity affecting neighborhoods and populations across the county. Karla successfully championed the adoption of the One Fairfax Racial and Social Equity Resolution and Policy and provides overall management of the One Fairfax strategic framework, advising and supporting the Board of Supervisors and county leadership and staff in shaping and directing policy and practice to foster equitable opportunity for all Fairfax County residents.

Karla is a regular presenter, panelist, and is a nationally recognized thought leader on topics related to the role of government in advancing equity.
