Shawn Edelstein, a Center for Global Sustainability (CGS) Research Assistant and senior in the University of Maryland's College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, was named the 2024-2025 Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar. This prestigious scholars program, supported by the generosity of the Merrill family, recognizes academic excellence and emphasizes the crucial role of teachers and faculty as mentors. In addition to honoring outstanding seniors, the Merrill award program also recognizes the work of K-12 teachers and the University of Maryland faculty for their mentorship of the Merrill scholars and are nominated by their students.
During his time at CGS, Edelstein conducted consequential climate research and developed actionable policy recommendations that support the advancement of U.S. climate goals.
"Working at CGS has been an incredible experience," Edelstein said. "I've gained firsthand experience in pioneering research and policy implementation on both national and global scales, while also strengthening my understanding of the real-world impacts that shape climate and sustainability outcomes."
Collaborating with CGS Assistant Research Professor Jiehong Lou, Shawn recently co-authored an analysis aimed at helping policymakers understand the disparities in the equitable distribution of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in Maryland. This crucial work has guided efforts to prioritize the development of public charging networks in key regions, such as Maryland Eastern Shore, and to address areas with infrastructure gaps.
"Engaging in this analysis was a real opportunity to use research and policy to promote equitable action so that no Marylander is left behind," Edelstein emphasized,
Edelstein credits his achievements to Dr. Lou, expressing gratitude for her "unwavering support and guidance" in realizing climate action across all societal sectors within Maryland, enhancing community access to climate benefits, and fostering economic development in disadvantaged areas.
In recognition of her impact on Shawn's academic success, Dr. Lou is also being honored for her mentorship.
"It has been an honor and privilege to work with Shawn," Dr. Lou says. “His intellect and commitment to equitable climate action and inclusive policy development are truly remarkable. My work with Shawn reflects my dedication to helping young scholars create a sustainable future through transformative climate policy."
Looking ahead, Dr. Lou said that CGS will continue to nurture young scholars, mentoring them to fulfill its mission of transforming global perspectives and policies on climate action through innovative research and dynamic engagement.
