Join the University of Maryland School of Public Policy for the Summer Institute of Change a free summer community-based experiential learning program for a new generation of public leadership. The program is focused on Prince George's County and will prepare you to enter the field of public policy, in the County and beyond.

Program Dates

Cost

Tuition-free for all Institute Fellows. Fees may apply for Institute Fellows utilizing the program for course and/or transfer credit.

Note: If you are interested in applying for a course or transfer credit for your institution, you will also need to apply and be admitted to UMD"s Office of Extended Studies upon acceptance of the Summer Institute of Change.

Eligibility
  • Rising sophomore or junior at a Prince George’s County-based college or university
  • Interest in policy, governance, community development, or social justice 
  • 2.5 GPA or higher

Curriculum

The program will award undergraduate college credits for a mix of classroom instruction and county-based experiential assignments. In addition to faculty classroom instruction, guest lectures, and site visits; Institute Fellows will have two primary experiential opportunities in the County, (1) serving as “staff” is a nonprofit, community, or governmental organization working substantively on real-world problems of import to the citizens of the County, and (2) serving as mentors and team leaders (with the assistance from their own faculty mentors). Each Institute Fellow will provide information on their policy or governance interests to better align with their experiential work with county partners.
