A conversation with Peter G. Brown, founder of the School of Public Policy
On September 1, 1981, the Diamondback student newspaper ran the below front page story announcing that the new School of Public Affairs was to open, having hired a dean, five faculty members, and found some space to make their initial residence in LeFrak Hall. At that time, with less than a year to go before the doors would open to welcome the inaugural class, they were still working to establish the critical components of this new endeavor. A curriculum was under development, additional faculty were required, all of the administrative processes to support a school needed to be created, and the students themselves had yet to be recruited. The School of Public Policy has come a long way since the Fall of 1982 when twenty-five students took a chance on this startup institution and became the first cohort to enter the Master of Public Management program.
To mark the start of our 40th Anniversary year, we invite you to join Peter G. Brown, founding associate dean and driving force behind the School’s establishment, and generations of alums to explore how the field of public policy must evolve to meet the challenges of the coming decades and our School’s role in this revisioning.
