Student Awards
The Excellence in Teaching award recognizes a teaching assistant who has provided an exceptional instructional experience for Master’s or undergraduate students, and outstanding support to the faculty instructor. Demonstrating a strong commitment to helping students achieve success, the teaching assistant has been instrumental in students’ mastery of policy topics, methods and/or practice.
Who is eligible? PhD, Master’s and Undergraduate teaching assistants

Nomination Materials: Statement describing how the nominee’s contribution as a teaching assistant constitutes excellence in teaching (e.g. innovative approaches, special advising, atypical circumstances, student experiences/comments, etc.)
The Beyond the Classroom award recognizes a student (or group of students) that has made a significant positive impact beyond the classroom. Embodying a public mindedness that reflects the values of the School, this student(s) has carried their learning in the classroom out into the community, making change at the local, national, or global level. Through their efforts, the student(s) has positively impacted communities, made a valuable contribution to policy debates and discussions, and has generally advanced the public good.

Nomination materials: Statement describing how the nominee has made a positive impact beyond the classroom, addressing: how the student’s efforts have positively influenced outcomes; the nature of the impact, including its scale and scope; its linkages to the School (e.g. extension of coursework, involvement of community members); and the ongoing significance of the impact.
The Innovative Research award recognizes a student (or group of students) whose research is making significant advances to knowledge and techniques in their field. Through an interdisciplinary approach to their research, this student(s) has shed new light on policy issues and challenges, and has positively contributed to the intellectual community at the School, University, and beyond.

Nomination materials: Statement describing the nominee’s body of research and how it has advanced (or is advancing) knowledge and techniques in their field, including reference to: commitment to developing research skills and knowledge; evidence of independent and critical thinking; active participation in research-related activities on campus; contributions to the research culture in the School, University, and wider intellectual community
If nominated by a student, the nominator should also provide the name of a faculty member with knowledge of the student’s work
Staff Awards
The Outstanding Service award recognizes a staff member who has gone ‘above and beyond’ in serving the School, improving the lives and work of faculty, staff, and students. With a willingness to help in whatever capacity necessary, this staff member positively influences our School and contributes to the success of our entire community.

The Champion of Student Success award recognizes a staff member who has demonstrated excellence in supporting the School’s students. Committed to helping students to the best of their ability, this staff member has provided exceptional assistance, guidance and inspiration. Through their dedication they have had a meaningful and lasting impact on students, making a real difference in students’ personal and professional lives.

Faculty Awards
The Outstanding Teaching Award recognizes a faculty member who has made contributions to the teaching and learning mission of the University that are of extraordinary quality. Committed to inspiring and preparing students for their work and life beyond the School, this faculty member provides outstanding instruction, innovative teaching methods and course design, and conveys and instils a passion for lifelong learning.

Nomination materials: Statement describing how the nominee’s contribution to the teaching and learning mission are of extraordinary quality, including evidence of: teaching that influences, motivates and inspires students to learn; development of curriculum and resources that promote student learning; ability to communicate and otherwise provide a rich and inclusive learning environment; and/or ability to effectively and inspiringly link teaching, research, and/or experiential learning.
The Public Impact award recognizes a faculty member (or group of faculty) committed to the School’s mission of promoting the public good. Embodying the scholar-practitioner approach, the faculty member has used their academic research and expertise in tangible service of a significant policy challenge at the local, national, or international level. In serving the public good, and reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of these policy challenges, the faculty member has used their research and expertise in cooperation with other actors, and has played a meaningful role in improving policy and promoting the public good.

The Research Excellence award recognizes a faculty member (or members in the case of collaborative research) who is pushing the boundaries of applied, interdisciplinary research. Through their research work, the faculty member(s) is positioning the School of Public Policy to explore new and innovative fields of inquiry, and contributing to a robust and active research agenda at the School.

Nomination materials: Statement describing how the nominee is pushing the boundaries of applied, interdisciplinary research, including: description of research agenda and how it is contributing to a robust research enterprise at the School; specific research activities underway or recently completed, and their impact in advancing the state of knowledge and practice; and/or any recent research achievements (successful funding applications for further work, other awards or recognition).
Alumni and Supporters
The Distinguished Terrapin award recognizes an alumnus or supporter of the School who has brought credit to the School through their personal accomplishments or professional achievements in service of the public good. Recognizing a particular achievement of significant value, a series of such distinctive achievements, or a career of noteworthy accomplishment, the award celebrates the impact our alumni and supporters have on society.

The Community Builder award recognizes a member of the community (student, staff, or faculty) that has made invaluable contributions to building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable School community. As a leader in the School this person has actively advanced the School's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and in doing so, strengthened our sense of community and provided opportunities for learning, understanding, and connection. Whether in the classroom or out, through teaching or research, as a leader or a mentor, this person has brought the School closer to realizing our shared commitment to being a community that values, celebrates, and respects the experiences, perspectives, and contributions of all.
